This Stay at a Glance

The Hyatt Regency Newport Beach is a resort-style property situated near Upper Newport Bay in Orange County, California. It is important to distinguish this from the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach West—a business-focused hotel near the airport—as the two offer distinct experiences. This property is better suited for guests looking to enjoy expansive grounds and outdoor activities rather than those seeking modern, updated room interiors.

During our Christmas holiday stay, high occupancy meant a Globalist suite upgrade was unavailable. The room featured the spacious layout and calm aesthetic typical of the Hyatt Regency brand, though the facilities show their age compared to recently renovated properties. That said, the resort offers a variety of amenities, including multiple outdoor pools, tennis courts, and a Par-3 golf course, making it a compelling choice for those who prefer spending their time outdoors.

The outdoor pool at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach includes a water slide and provided a quiet atmosphere to relax among the palm trees during our stay.

Room Upgrade Experience

Room on this stayStandard King

Due to high occupancy over the 2024 Christmas holiday, a suite upgrade wasn't available, and I was assigned a Standard King room. The room features the spacious layout typical of Hyatt Regency, with a dark brown headboard, a calm aesthetic, and soft lighting that creates a cozy environment. However, compared to recently renovated properties, the facilities feel a bit dated.

Breakfast Experience

Breakfast was a highlight of the stay. Rather than offering an overwhelming number of choices, the focus is on the quality of the core menu, and the cooking at SHOR is consistently solid. The tostada-style dishes with crispy tortillas and the huevos rancheros—topped with fresh avocado, pico de gallo, and salsa—made for an excellent, hearty meal. The menu clearly labels vegan and gluten-free options alongside staples like pancakes and omelets, making it convenient for guests with dietary restrictions.

Pools & Facilities Experience

The large outdoor pool is the centerpiece of this resort. As I visited in winter, the atmosphere was quiet, but the clear California weather allowed me to enjoy the pool area, including the water slides and sunbeds, at a leisurely pace. I expect the resort to have a much more vibrant atmosphere during the summer months.

Beyond the multiple outdoor pools and tennis courts, there is a Par-3 golf course that guests can use freely, which led me to spend more time outdoors than in the room. Even if you don't play golf, the well-maintained landscaping and harbor views make the grounds perfect for a relaxing stroll. The information sheet provided at check-in included detailed operating hours and safety guidelines for the pool and fitness center, which I found useful throughout my stay.

Before You Book

It is best to approach Hyatt Regency Newport Beach as a leisure-focused resort with expansive grounds rather than a modern luxury property. Note that it is distinct from the 'Hyatt Regency Newport Beach West,' which is optimized for airport access and business travel, so be careful when booking. This property is well-suited for enjoying on-site amenities like the pool, golf, and tennis, though upgrades may be limited during peak seasons or holidays when the resort is at capacity.
