The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego is a sprawling property perched where downtown meets the waterfront. Rooms in the high-rise towers offer impressive views of the San Diego Bay and the city skyline. The location is hard to beat, providing immediate access to the waterfront promenade and putting major attractions like Seaport Village and the USS Midway Museum within easy walking distance. While the hotel draws a heavy business crowd due to its proximity to the convention center, it functions more like an urban resort than a typical business hotel.

Even during the busy Christmas season, I received a Globalist upgrade to a 1 King Bed Studio Deluxe room, which felt quite spacious. I made frequent use of the Grand Club for breakfast and evening service, and the property’s extensive amenities—including a large fitness center and outdoor pools—are a major plus. It’s an ideal choice for travelers looking to balance sightseeing with downtime. Visiting when San Diego’s weather is at its mildest really highlights the property’s appeal as a true urban resort.

For this stay, we received a Globalist upgrade to a 1 King Bed Studio Deluxe. While not a traditional 1-bedroom suite with a door separating the bedroom and living area, it is a spacious studio measuring approximately 700 sq ft (65㎡). It features a distinct sofa area, a work desk, and a kitchenette equipped with a microwave and mini-fridge, which provides a noticeable improvement in functionality over a standard room.

This extra space was particularly useful for us. We hosted friends for light refreshments, and unlike a standard room where everyone would be crowded around the bed, there was plenty of room to spread out on the sofa and in the lounge area. We ended up having a game night, watching the large TV and sharing food, which made our time spent in the room a highlight of the trip.

We were very satisfied with this upgrade, especially given how busy the hotel was during the Christmas season. While it isn't a suite in the traditional sense, the 700 sq ft footprint, kitchenette, and dedicated seating area make it a practical choice for groups or longer stays.

The Grand Club was a great place to experience Globalist benefits at this property. It offered a quiet escape from the bustling public areas of this large hotel, and we appreciated being able to enjoy breakfast in the lounge rather than heading down to the main restaurant.

Note that the hotel is currently undergoing a large-scale renovation, and the Grand Club has already been updated. If you visit now, the lounge may look different than it did during our stay.

In the evening, the Grand Club offered enough for a light meal. There were a few hot dishes available, along with salads and a cheese plate, which was sufficient for a quick bite after spending the day exploring San Diego.

Compared to other Grand Hyatt lounges where happy hour can serve as a full dinner, the offerings here were a bit more modest, but still practical for a light evening meal before heading back to the room. The presence of hot food made a noticeable difference compared to a simple snack service.

One downside was the lack of complimentary alcohol. If you are looking for a happy hour with wine, beer, or cocktails, you might be disappointed. For us, it was more about the quiet atmosphere and the ability to finish the day with a salad, cheese, and a warm bite.

We had breakfast in the Grand Club. The biggest advantage was the ability to start the day in a relatively quiet environment rather than navigating a large, crowded breakfast venue.

Given the hotel's massive scale and its popularity with both business and leisure travelers, avoiding the busy public dining areas was a significant convenience. It wasn't necessarily a breakfast defined by unique menu items, but rather by the comfort of a peaceful start to the day.

Note that dining operations may change due to ongoing renovations. The hotel has indicated that the traditional Seaview breakfast restaurant is currently under renovation, with breakfast service moved to Sally's Waterfront Dining. It is best to check current operations if you prefer a full restaurant breakfast.

One of the most surprising aspects of the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego was the sheer scale of the facilities, which is rare for a hotel in the heart of the city. There is an outdoor pool, recreational space, and a fitness center that feels much larger than a typical hotel gym. Even in winter, the facilities were impressive, and it's easy to see how great the hotel would be during the peak season.

Official information notes that the 24-hour fitness center features over 30 pieces of cardio equipment, free weights, and strength machines, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the waterfront. The pool is an outdoor space that also offers views of the bay and downtown.

However, as of 2026, the hotel is undergoing renovations. While the newly updated 3rd-floor Coastline Pool & Lounge is open, the second pool on the 4th floor is currently closed for construction, and the fitness center is slated for completion in December 2026. If you are expecting specific facilities based on older reviews, it is highly recommended to check the current operating status before booking.

As a large hotel located on the downtown waterfront, parking at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego is expensive. Rates fluctuate based on the season, with self-parking typically ranging from $45–$55 and valet parking from $65–$75.

The Manchester Grand Hyatt is well-positioned for walking to Seaport Village, the waterfront, the USS Midway Museum, and the Gaslamp Quarter, while offering amenities like a pool, a large fitness center, and a Grand Club upon returning to the hotel. It effectively combines the location of a business hotel with the scale of a large resort.

For Globalist members, the Grand Club access and room upgrades can significantly enhance the stay. If you are upgraded to a 1 King Bed Studio Deluxe like we were, the 700 sq ft of space makes the room a much more enjoyable place to spend time, and the lounge provides a convenient way to handle breakfast and light evening meals on-site.

However, the hotel is currently undergoing phased renovations, including some pool and fitness facilities. Conversely, areas like the Deluxe rooms, Grand Club, and the 3rd-floor pool have already been updated, so your experience may differ from older reviews.

Personally, I was impressed by the scale of the facilities even during a winter visit. I would love to return during a season when we can fully enjoy the San Diego weather—spending time at the pool, walking the waterfront, and relaxing in the lounge—to fully appreciate the hotel's 'urban resort' appeal.
