This Stay at a Glance

This resort offered a peaceful retreat after the demanding drive along the Road to Hana. As the area's original resort, it shows some age, though it remains well-maintained. Its location, just a five-minute drive from Black Sand Beach, made it the perfect final stop for our journey.

Tall palms stand in rows over a wide lawn, with the blue sea and sky at the end of the path between them. Walking the grounds, scenes like this kept appearing in every direction, and the walks ran long.
String lights strung between the rows of palms cast a warm glow over the path and buildings under the night sky. This was the walk back to the room after dinner, when the whole resort was very quiet.
A traditional canoe with red markings set on the lawn, with a huge tree, palms and a small pavilion behind. You come across it naturally while walking the grounds, and it felt like Hawaiian culture woven into the landscaping.
Tall palms, a stone wall and a traditional wooden resort gate at the end of the road under a clear sky. This was the first thing I saw arriving at Hana-Maui Resort, and the moment I passed the gate everything seemed to slow down.
The coastline near the resort, with blue waves breaking on black lava rock and a clear horizon beyond. It is a short walk out from the property, but the surf is rough, so it is safer not to get too close to the rocks.

Room Upgrade Experience

Room on this stay1 King Bed Ocean View Bungalow

We stayed in a 1 King Bed Ocean View Bungalow. Although categorized as a suite, the living and sleeping areas are not fully partitioned. The room includes a small wet bar and a spacious terrace with a distant ocean view. Note that 'Oceanfront' rooms face the water directly, while from our 'Ocean View' room, you must step onto the terrace to see the water. Some Oceanfront terraces feature hot tubs.

The wide tiled tub by the window in the 1 King Bed Ocean View Bungalow bathroom. The window is full of palms and greenery, and sitting in a full bath felt almost like being outdoors.
The 1 King Bed Ocean View Bungalow bathroom with a stone-textured round sink and warm sconces on either side of the mirror. Dark cabinets run along the wall for plenty of storage, and the soft lighting was easy on the eyes at night.
Past the two rattan chairs on the 1 King Bed Ocean View Bungalow's private terrace, a meadow, tropical trees and the distant sea open up. During my spring 2025 stay I sat here every morning, and true to the bungalow's name, the ocean was right in view.
The round number plate for room 504 on a dark green plank wall, lit by a cylindrical light above. Braille runs beneath the number, and since this was the entrance to my 1 King Bed Ocean View Bungalow, this little light guided me home every evening.

Lounge access was not available on this stay.

Breakfast Experience

The restaurant serves breakfast only. Perhaps due to the remote location, ingredient freshness was average; our beef was tough and overcooked compared to the medium we requested. That said, the garden views were lovely, and the staff were consistently friendly and attentive.

A bowl of ramen and several drinks on the outdoor terrace table. Topped with egg, fish cake and meat, it was a breakfast dish, and eating it facing the palms and a cloudy sky made even a simple bowl of noodles feel special.
A breakfast plate of steak, fried eggs and roasted potatoes on the outdoor terrace. With an iced drink and palms and greenery behind, it was a hearty way to start the day.

Pools & Facilities Experience

There are two outdoor pools: a standard resort-style pool near the gym and a tiered pool closer to the ocean, which offers a great vantage point for taking in the Hana scenery.

Bicycle rentals are available for exploring the surrounding area.

Two stationary bikes in the fitness center face an open window looking out on the pool, garden and a row of sunbeds. With that view ahead, pedaling never got boring, and I came by every morning of the stay.
The outdoor pool surrounded by a wide stone deck, palms and the resort buildings. Even at midday on a clear day it was quiet, and I spent a long time just floating and looking at the sky.
A well-kept outdoor tennis court under a blue sky, tropical trees around it and a single white bird standing on the lawn in front. It was so quiet around the court that the bird stayed put for ages without minding me.
Mint-green bicycles lined up along the pillars of the outdoor corridor, with the garden and paths spread out in the sun beyond. They are for guests to borrow, and on a property this large, getting around by bike is easier than on foot.
The outdoor equipment corner with a basket of tennis rackets, a golf club rack and basketballs. A clipboard for sign-out and cans of tennis balls sit on a small wooden table, so you just write your name and help yourself, no staff needed.

The staff were consistently friendly and proactive, clearly taking pride in being the first resort in the Hana area. Since vehicle access is restricted near the bungalows, staff assisted with luggage transport during both check-in and check-out.

Two orange welcome drinks on a wooden tray with a red hibiscus, handed over at check-in. It was spring 2025, and a cold juice right on arrival was especially welcome.

The outdoor lot is somewhat cramped. Given the abundance of trees and birds in the area, you should keep an eye on your vehicle's condition.

Other fees: The resort fee was waived as we were staying on a World of Hyatt Globalist points redemption.

Late checkout was honored on this stay: 2 PM

The outdoor parking lot, ringed by grassy slopes and palm trees. If you drive in with a rental car this is where it goes, and it is worth checking before booking whether parking is covered by the resort fee when planning your budget.

Before You Book

Given the travel time required for the Road to Hana, a two-night stay felt ideal. With very few shops or restaurants nearby, it is wise to bring snacks or essential supplies if you plan to arrive late.

A food truck is permanently stationed right next to the resort. Because the on-site restaurant serves breakfast only and there is just one other dining option nearby, most guests rely on the truck. The food quality is decent.

The lobby with its high wooden ceiling and stone floor, three oil paintings of Hawaiian beaches on the walls and a long console table in the middle. No flashy decor, just art, wood and stone, and it set a calm tone the moment I arrived.
